The European University Hospital Alliance (EUHA) is thrilled to announce its expansion, welcoming HUS Helsinki University Hospital as its latest member. This addition brings EUHA’s network to 11 of Europe’s leading university hospitals, solidifying our mission to build a network of sustainable healthcare ecosystems in Europe which achieve the best possible quality of care with the resources available. HUS membership marks a significant milestone for EUHA, reinforcing our commitment to positioning university hospitals as key players in the healthcare system, with demonstrated expertise in healthcare, research, education, and—importantly—innovation.
HUS Helsinki University Hospital stands out as a leading European institution, renowned for its excellence in clinical care, research, and education—with a standout expertise in digital health and Health Information Technologies. HUS leads in e-Health solutions, including telemedicine, remote monitoring, and data-driven innovations like Artificial Intelligence. Known for pioneering personalised medicine, robotic surgery, and precision diagnostics, HUS also plays a central role in Finland’s recent Health and Social Care Reform, modelling efficient, sustainable healthcare. Its expertise in digital health and commitment to innovation align seamlessly with EUHA’s vision of university hospitals as integral innovation hubs within healthcare. Recognising innovation as a critical, fourth pillar of university hospital roles, EUHA is excited to work with HUS to drive forward impactful, transformative projects that benefit patients and health systems alike.
Health and Social Care Reform
The recent Finnish Health and Social Care Reform, introduced in 2023, further enhances HUS’s strategic importance within EUHA. This reform prioritises equitable access, integrated care, and sustainable funding, especially for university hospitals handling complex cases and research. This reform fosters integration between primary, specialised healthcare, and social services to ensure high-quality, equitable care and reduce health disparities.
HUS offers a valuable setting for EUHA to explore these innovations, providing lessons for potential healthcare reforms across Europe.
EUHA Members’ Assembly – November 2024
HUS has already actively participated in EUHA initiatives, having recently joined the EUHA Autumn Members’ Assembly in November 2024, hosted by IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital. As mentioned by Matti Bergendahl and Marku Mäkijärvi, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer respectively:
We at HUS Helsinki University Hospital are extremely happy about the invitation to join EUHA. This is a great opportunity for us to collaborate with other European high-level university hospitals. We are looking forward to EUHA membership to bring us possibilities to extensive and high-level collaboration, benchmarking, and potentially building up new treatments and medications with other best European university hospitals. Chief Executive Officer, Matti Bergendahl, from HUS Helsinki University Hospital.

As a full-coverage tertiary-level university hospital, HUS Helsinki University Hospital has broad interests in collaborating with other EUHA organisations. For example, Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products and Digital health forums are close to our interests. Of course, EUHA’s ability to influence EU regulation regarding university hospital perspective is also a highly interesting possibility.
